Portuguese translation below
![]() Tiradentes' Bicentennial Year - through commemorations and honors, actions and events—to the mobilization purposes of the Brazilian society in order to reflect upon citizenship, actuality and Brazil's future. This is the moment to remember the wish expressed by the thought ascribed to Ensign Joaquim José da Silva Xavier "Tiradentes": With everybody's will we could make Brazil great Nation . Nowadays, this wish expresses the effort made by the Brazilian Government at searching out solutions for our problems, so that we will be allowed to see beyond our time: and to construct a modern and prosperous Brazil, social) equitable, exactly as the Civic Patron of the Brazilian Nation has: dreamt, 200 years ago. The Bicentennial of Tiradentes' Execution that took place on April 21, 1792, also brings about the realization of studies: and researches that call forth the revision and understanding of the "Inconfidência l\/lineira"'s historical meaning (1788-1792) (Revolutionary movement against the Portuguese colonialism in Brazil.) Although there is no questioning about the merit of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, a brave spirit and single victim of a fight for a noble cause, willing to march toward this utmost sacrifice without demur, yet there are points which deserve a comprehensive analysis since they are essential for the development of our historic memory. Freedom and democracy Citizenship and people. Tiradentes' faces. Tiradentes, the statesman. Tiradentes' leadership. The influence of 18^ century new ideas. The acknowledge of the United States Independence, a new Republic in America. The plans made for the new Nation. The truth within the "Autos da Devassa" (Records concerning the hearing of witnesses during the judicial inquiry. ) Those are some themes that can be suggested among others. Studies and researches, however, are not to be restricted to Joaquim José da Silva Xavier only. The revision which we propose should analyze the "Inconfidência Mineira" as a whole including the role of the conspirators involved and its historic importance for building up our nationality. The major objective to guide us is to make truth the dream of Tiradentes and his fellows in ideal had: the conquering of s free, modern, worthy Nation with a quality of life assuring full citizenship rights to all people. If the children and the young people of today could rediscover the teachings and values of our heroes of the past, they would be helping Brazil in consolidating its great and near future. And then, we could appropriately tell that those heroes did not dream in vain, they did not pursue the impossible: Brazil shall be a great Nation at dawn of the 21St century!
